Don't Go Chasing Waterfalls
Mayor Steve Bateman does have a lot in common with infomercial king Tom Vu, they both have fancy cars, watercraft, nice homes and waterfalls. Mayor Bateman has multiple waterfalls, one at the pawnshop he invested in and several at Homestead City Hall. One used a group of women on a boat as a backdrop to his infomercials and the other had a situation in Biscayne National Park involving two women on a boat.
Below is the transcript of a discussion on the strong mayor initiative at a city council meeting. However, in this instance repeating himself on three occasions was a reminder that Mayor Bateman may have far more in common with Tom Vu’s incessant repetition of “Come To My Seminar” then even we thought.
Former Councilman Jeff Porter commented there was talk of an initiative on the street to put on the ballot a strong Mayoral form of government. He suggested the Council take a lead on the discussion and invite all interested parties to the table to have honest discourse relating to the pros and cons since the city had been operating for over 50 years under a strong City Manager model.
Further the entire body of the City Council governed together As someone currently opposed to the strong Mayoral form of government. Mr. Porter stated he would like to be included in the discussion.
Mayor Bateman offered to meet with Mr. Porter to have this discussion
Mr Porter pointed out that this would be a fundamental change in how the government is structured if the City moves away from the current form of government He stated discussion would provide the possibility to arrive at a proper outcome If the will of the voters is to go to a strong Mayor form of government then so be it. He stated there was no reason for such an initiative to happen because this City had an open door policy and initiatives from the community normally came from inaction by the City Council however such incidents were not common with the current Council.
Mayor Bateman reiterated his offer to meet with Mr. Porter next week
Councilwoman Waldman questioned whether Mr Porter was asking for a public forum.
Mr. Porter responded if there was a major support to change the direction in which the city government ran then a dialogue needed to be held because the individuals who were pro for the movement would be doing so at the expense of those in the community who held a different stance. Mr. Porter suggested the Council put together a workshop opened to the public to get an account of what the concerns in the community were if any.
Mayor Bateman expressed Mr. Porter should foremost meet with him
Waterfalls are very important to success for both Tom Vu and Mayor Bateman as are photographs.
