SOUTHCOM IN DANGER?: During the Miami Military Advocacy Committee meeting at the Greater Miami Chamber of Conference Goals Conference 2012, Chairman Don Slesnick cited rumors that the US Southern Command based in Doral may be merged with the US Northern Command in Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado.
He said another rumor has both commands being merged and moved to San Antonio, TX. "If we don't keep" the Southern Command, he said, "we lose a great deal in our community." The Southern Command, known as SOUTHCOM, overseas the defense and protection of Central and South America, the Panama Canal and the Caribbean.
The command has more than 1,200 military and civilian personnel representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and several other federal agencies.
