Five months after having been exonerated of a criminal prosecution, the head of the Department of police of Doral, Ricardo Gomez, sued the councilman and candidate for Mayor of that city, Pete Cabrera, the former Councilwoman Sandra Ruiz and former manager Sergio Purriños for libel.
"These people made me a very great damage," Gomez said Thursday. "At this time I gave them ample opportunity to apologize, but at no time did". "On the contrary, continue on the street saying the same lies that instigated an investigation to slander me".

Gomez was investigated by the State police of Florida (FDLE) for its alleged interference in the process of acquisition of furniture of Office and the allocation of municipal funds to finance a lavish ceremony of Doral police.

The Miami-Dade State Attorney concluded that Gómez did not commit any crime, although FDLE investigators had asked for his arrest.

Ibrahim Reyes, Gomez's lawyer, indicated that the civil suit was filed Tuesday with the Circuit Court of Miami - Dade and requires more $15,000 compensation for the costs of legal defence during the investigation.

In a brief statement sent by email, Cabrera said that demand for Gomez has political motives and seeks to damage his campaign for municipal elections in November.

Cabrera is one of the three candidates seeking to replace in the Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez, after nearly nine years in Office. The other two candidates are Councilman Luigi Bòria and Doral, Frank Bolaños activist and former President of the School Board of Miami - Dade.

"Is shameful attack on my campaign," said Cabrera. "These intimidation tactics to affect me in the forthcoming elections will not succeed." "Our community knows very well about my positive track record of public service, commitment to speak the truth and efforts against the waste of the Government".

Reyes rejected the lawsuit against Cabrera had political motivations.
"Ricky is not political, is a police officer and has no intentions of seeking a political position," said Reyes. "On the other hand Cabrera Yes being picked up for mayor".
According to demand, Cabrera, Ruiz and Purriños conspired to orchestrate a plan that instigara a criminal investigation against Gómez by public and sustained corruption in false allegations.

Reyes said that for several years Cabrera maintains a public confrontation with Bermúdez and to damage its management at the City Hall tried to stain the image of the Department of police and Gomez as head of that force.

By mid-2011, the FDLE began an investigation then that an anonymous letter sent to the city of Doral denounced alleged irregularities in the police.

Reyes recalled that the city attorney, Jimmy Morales, instructed the Councillors and municipal officials to not comment on the case since there was already an investigation in progress.
"However, Cabrera addressed the press and took a political podium to discredit the police chief and the Department to damage the administration of Mayor Bermudez," Reyes said.

The FDLE investigation focused on a furniture tender in 2007 for the police and in the payment of almost $26,000 to the Doral Golf Resort & Spa to perform a ceremony of opening of the new Police Department. The money had been donated by a supplier of the police.
Depending on demand, Purriños had told the FDLE advised Gomez make the ceremony at a secondary school. However, the Purriños signature appears in the contract with Doral Golf Resort & Spa to perform the ceremony. The indictment also attached the copy of a check for $14,216 paid to this recreation, with the signing of Purriños Center.
Purriños, who argued that he had not been notified of the demand, expressed surprise.

"With Ricky always have taken me well, so I am surprised extraordinarily this demand," said Purriños to El Nuevo Herald. "I am sure that him is not and he is being manipulated." "He is a victim."
Purriños rejected that it has conspired to defame Gomez. He added that last year was called by the FDLE agents to be interviewed.

"The only thing I did was respond honestly," said Purriños.
