City Shut Out of Election Wait Time Investigation

Posted on 09:35 by Unknown

By Christina Veiga

cveiga@MiamiHerald.com

Homestead wants to be part of an advisory group looking into why voting took so long in Miami-Dade County on Election Day — but the city won’t get a seat at the table.

Voters in Homestead waited more than four hours in some cases just to cast ballots during early and regular voting for the November general election. Many others around the county faced similar, monumental wait times.

So Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez put together an advisory group to look into what went wrong at the polls, and how to fix it.

Homestead City Clerk Elizabeth Sewell sent the county a letter on Nov. 19 requesting that she or the city manager be part of the group. But when Gimenez announced on Nov. 20 who would be on the task force, neither Homestead’s city clerk nor the city manager were on the list.

County spokesman Fernando Figueredo said the group members were chosen to give “wide representation” of county voters. The advisory group meets for the first time this week.

“The mayor wanted to go ahead and move forward with this group,” Figueredo said. “Now remember, this is the first meeting, so they might consider adding more folks as they move forward.”

Said Vice Mayor Jon Burgess: “It would be great if we had someone there...but we can’t, and now we need to look at what our next best avenue is.”

That next best avenue, Burgess said, may lead Homestead to the county Board of Commissioners.
Commissioner Lynda Bell was named part of the task force, and she is a former mayor of the city whose current district includes Homestead. She still lives in the city.

Representatives in commissioner Bell’s office said they offered to the county several names of volunteers who had asked to be part of the task force. Of those volunteers, one was named to the group: Alice Ancona of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce.

Homestead city officials did not make a request through Bell’s office to be part of the advisory committee, according to the commissioner’s chief of staff.

A Real State Of The City Shock Report: Miami Today News Reports Trump Not Building Studio City

Posted on 17:25 by Unknown

Trump Tells Homestead "You're Fired!"

Wow, There Goes $94,900,000 Down The Drain, They Promised $260,000 Per Day In Payroll Alone.

Mayor Bateman’s assessment was succinct. “This is a win-win. It is the best economic opportunity we have had in a long time. Shame on us, if we don’t make it happen.” Shame Indeed.
Trump won't open Miami film complex
By Catherine Lackner
It was the stuff of fantasy: a vast film and entertainment complex supported by the Trump Organization, rising on 790 county-owned acres near Homestead Air Reserve Base in far southern Miami-Dade County.
Trump Studio City was to have two mega stages of 218,000 square feet each, two sound stages of 109,000 square feet each, 10 smaller sound stages, back lots, offices, digital production facilities, a media hub, office and event space, a hotel, retail, a landing strip and possibly even a magnet school for film production.
But encumbrances on the land, coupled with environmental concerns, probably have killed the deal.
Joe Martinez, Miami-Dade commissioner, proposed the mega-complex in June.
"What does Hollywood have that we don't have?" Mr. Martinez asked then. "What does L.A. have that we don't have? They are not as close to Central and South America as we are. They are not as close to the financial capital of the world as we are. They are not as close to Europe as we are. Why can't we have an industry that even the environmentalists like — the movie industry?"
The county commission requested a report on legal restrictions from the county attorney's office. The report, completed in late August, breaks the property into nine parcels, seven of which have significant restrictions.
"That was never anything that was part of our office," said Jack Osterholt, county deputy mayor. "If anybody else from the private sector or anybody on the dais wants to do something, we'll help out. But as far as we're concerned, it's over."
Parcels two, five, six and eight and not available for use, the report says, because they are owned or used by an entity other than the county, or subject to other restrictions. Some of the space is dedicated to park use, some has been set aside for homeless programs, and some has been leased to the US government on a long-term basis.
Parcels three and four, which are close but not contiguous and comprise 200 acres, "had the fewest restrictions," the report says. However, they might contain asbestos and might be the home of an endangered species of snake. A restriction says there can't be an airport there, or any use that supports an airport. Because the site is more than 30 miles south of Miami, supporters said an air strip or airport would have been advantageous.
Neither Mr. Martinez nor the Trump Organization responded to requests for comment.

Candidate For South Dade CDD (Waterstone) Uses Portofino Estates Landscape Company For Campaign Sign Placement

Posted on 09:29 by Unknown
Candidate Maycol Enriquez is a Portofino Estates POA Board Member

The landscape company is contracted to Portofino Estates landscape maintenance.

Is the property manager Alton Madison aware of this?

In Waterstone instead of property maintenance the landscape crews do political work?

Would the South Dade CDD be subject to similar personal or political contractor tasks?

Two PACs run by Frank May, one with Jeff Porter and one with Tom David paid a combined $61,171 in 2009 and 2010 to Al Lorenzo and his firm now embroiled in controversy surrounding current elections. Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez and State Attorney Katherine Fernandez-Rundle have had to disassociate with the firm and recuse herself from the investigation into absentee ballot fraud respectively.

Mayor Bateman and Councilman Williams paid Al Lorenzo $400 and $1,514 respectively in 2009. The Wayne Rosen, Redland Company, Homestead Concrete and Rene Taylor funded PAC that supported five current council members on the original filing documents paid $19,150 to Lorenzo.

PBA Blasts Katherine Fernandez-Rundle In Mailer

Posted on 14:50 by Unknown
 http://miamiherald.typepad.com/nakedpolitics/2012/08/08/

It seems every Democrat in Miami is getting these Police Benevolent Association-funded mailers that call Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle "The Most CORRUPT politician in Miami-Dade County."

It didn't help Rundle that her top campaign consultant, Al Lorenzo, hired career criminal Gerardo Judas "Jerry" Ramos to help work on her campaign.

The State Attorney's Office led by Rundle (pictured with Steve Bateman above) has closed several investigations into Mayor Steve Bateman as well, the alleged attempted sexual assault of a tenant, the "wiping clean" of caterer Joe Strano's utility bills totaling $10,499, the $1,000 rebate to Attorney John Maas's client and there have been rumors that the waiving of approximately $114,000 in code enforcement violations to affiliates of Prime Homebuilders is still being looked at.

Read the Strano and Maas Investigation Here:
 http://www.scribd.com/doc/67314792/Bateman-Case

Rundle also had to recuse herself from an absentee-ballot fraud investigation amid rumors that Lorenzo or someone in her campaign was tied to a ballot broker who has been charged for allegedly forging a voter's signature and violating a county ordinance prohibiting third parties from possessing more than two ballots of other voters.

PBA also put this mailer out.

Politics At Work? Trump Studio City Renderings and Commissioner Joe Martinez

Posted on 03:52 by Unknown

In a previously unannounced and unscheduled go, Commissioner Joe Martinez presented Trump’s plans at a regular public commission meeting June 5, 2012. Martinez is running against Mayor Carlos Gimenez in the August election.

Gimenez said he couldn’t comment on the plot because it was not on the regular meeting agenda. This was the first he had heard of it, he said.
Still, the commission voted unanimously for Miami-Dade to start a feasibility study on the project.  Of primary concern to the commission is how much of the land in question near the Homestead Air Reserve Base is contaminated and not fit to build on.

Homestead Base officials told The Miami Herald they were unaware of Trump’s proposal. Smaller studios recently built in Miami have not had sustained success.

For Martinez, Trump’s plot is his second pitch to fellow commissioners for a similar project. He pitched the thought of a Homestead film studio for the first time in 2001.

He told CBS 4 News in Miami, “Back then, I thought it was such a fantastic thought that I thought I would just propose it to my colleagues and it would pass and people would flock here. I’ve learned. I’ve matured. And I knew I had to get someone with a name.”

So he got Trump.
