Naranja Cemetery Subject of Lawsuit According to Riptide Report

Posted on 15:30 by Unknown

Crime

Dade's Palms Woodlawn Cemetery Intentionally Buries Bodies In Wrong Graves, Lawsuit Claims

By Jon Tayler
When Warren Griffith died in March 2001, there was one thing his wife, Janet Griffith, and his daughter, Cynthia Quintana, could be sure of. His body, which had been laid to rest at the Palms Woodlawn Funeral Home and Cemetery, would be buried in a plot that Janet had purchased, one that had her grave next to his so the two could be close to each other in death.

For the next seven years, Janet and Cynthia visited Warren's grave in the cemetery on Old South Dixie Highway in Naranja to pay their respects. But when Janet died in November 2008 and her body was taken to Palms Woodlawn, Cynthia says she learned something horrifying: The body in her father's grave belonged to a total stranger.

In a recently filed lawsuit, Quintana alleges that Palms Woodlawn employees "intentionally mis-buried" Warren Griffith in March 2001, then buried a non-related woman in Warren's grave. To make matters worse, they hid that secret from Quintana and her mother, then buried Janet Griffith on top of another unrelated person after her death.

"The defendant's conduct was malicious and intentional [and] is outrageous and goes beyond all bounds of decency in a civilized society," the lawsuit states.

A Real State Of The City Shock Report: "New City Hall Fund Interest" Used To Balance General Fund

Posted on 12:16 by Unknown

Since Curt Ivy was the City Manager the City of Homestead has a practice of using interest income to balance the General Fund expenses. The current administration is careful with their comments about the New City Hall Fund, the use of the interest money accrued from the fund is never mentioned, the key words are the fund remains or is still intact. As if that is an accomplishment.

The original fund for a new City Hall remains intact, according to city officials.

Whether they will be able to add to it by finding available funds in next year’s budget remains a question.

City spokeswoman BegoƱe Cazalis said the fund for a new City Hall is still intact.

Miami Herald reported the New City Hall Fund balance this past September was $17.3MM, the fund balance, had the interest been allowed to compound within the fund would be $19,706,773. The difference is $2.4MM.
The 2012 Fiscal Year just ended so another year's interest accrual will also have been utilized to balance the General Fund, keep that in mind also.

City Hall Fund Interest Accrual from the CAFR on record.

2008 Interest $218,108 or 1.3% of the balance page 20
2009 Interest $802,308 or 4.6% of the balance page 20
2010 Interest $602,564 or 3.4% of the balance page 20
2011 Interest $375,499 or 2.1% of the balance page 20

Total Interest 2008-2011 was $1,998,479, four year average interest rate was 2.9%

Four year average fund balance was $17,643,012.

A Real State Of The City Shock Report: Out Of Control $pending On $tate Of The City $peeche$

Posted on 05:55 by Unknown

The 2011 State of the City speech cost taxpayers approximately $25,000.

The 2012 State of the City speech is on track to break that record.

In 2011 it was a Prime Rib dinner. What's on the menu this year?

What happened to the Whine and Cheese Crowd, how did this yearly summary of government turn into a campaign event/coronation of Mayor Bateman with a full dinner service?

Will Mayor Moneybags have the taxpayers continue to fund these events or should private donations be solicited?

We would also like to let you know that $5,000 is on the agenda tonight to be spent for a Key Biscayne Golf Tournament, who will be playing in that tournament courtesy of taxpayers?

What's the Deal with Bateman and Maldonado?

Posted on 22:47 by Unknown

Why would a councilman wear the shirt of a vendor that sued the City of Homestead? Great question.

When you see one the other can't be far behind, literally. Can't tell if they resemble Dr. Evil and Minime or is it more like Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra?

Pufnstuf and Mayor McCheese also come to mind.

A Real State Of The City Shock Report: Miami Today News Reports Trump Not Building Studio City

Posted on 17:25 by Unknown

Trump Tells Homestead "You're Fired!"

Wow, There Goes $94,900,000 Down The Drain, They Promised $260,000 Per Day In Payroll Alone.

Mayor Bateman’s assessment was succinct. “This is a win-win. It is the best economic opportunity we have had in a long time. Shame on us, if we don’t make it happen.” Shame Indeed.
Trump won't open Miami film complex
By Catherine Lackner
It was the stuff of fantasy: a vast film and entertainment complex supported by the Trump Organization, rising on 790 county-owned acres near Homestead Air Reserve Base in far southern Miami-Dade County.
Trump Studio City was to have two mega stages of 218,000 square feet each, two sound stages of 109,000 square feet each, 10 smaller sound stages, back lots, offices, digital production facilities, a media hub, office and event space, a hotel, retail, a landing strip and possibly even a magnet school for film production.
But encumbrances on the land, coupled with environmental concerns, probably have killed the deal.
Joe Martinez, Miami-Dade commissioner, proposed the mega-complex in June.
"What does Hollywood have that we don't have?" Mr. Martinez asked then. "What does L.A. have that we don't have? They are not as close to Central and South America as we are. They are not as close to the financial capital of the world as we are. They are not as close to Europe as we are. Why can't we have an industry that even the environmentalists like — the movie industry?"
The county commission requested a report on legal restrictions from the county attorney's office. The report, completed in late August, breaks the property into nine parcels, seven of which have significant restrictions.
"That was never anything that was part of our office," said Jack Osterholt, county deputy mayor. "If anybody else from the private sector or anybody on the dais wants to do something, we'll help out. But as far as we're concerned, it's over."
Parcels two, five, six and eight and not available for use, the report says, because they are owned or used by an entity other than the county, or subject to other restrictions. Some of the space is dedicated to park use, some has been set aside for homeless programs, and some has been leased to the US government on a long-term basis.
Parcels three and four, which are close but not contiguous and comprise 200 acres, "had the fewest restrictions," the report says. However, they might contain asbestos and might be the home of an endangered species of snake. A restriction says there can't be an airport there, or any use that supports an airport. Because the site is more than 30 miles south of Miami, supporters said an air strip or airport would have been advantageous.
Neither Mr. Martinez nor the Trump Organization responded to requests for comment.

"NEW" City Hall Cash Pipeline Set To Flow With Competing Proposals

Posted on 15:26 by Unknown

Wayne Rosen wants to use the existing plans and local Architect J. Robert Barnes wants to design a destination for everyone. The Shores/ Wayne Rosen offering is the prudent version based upon the fact that over $1,000,000 has been spent on the design. What will the City of Homestead have to give up in exchange?

Mr. Barnes' proposal would be starting from scratch. Someone pointed out because the EOC, Emergency Operations Center will be housed in the building that having commercial/retail operations or parking garages attached would render the building potentially unsafe from an act of terrorism.

Both plans would help Homestead and the downtown area but it is undetermined by what margin and this is where the recurring revenue projections to the city have to be fully examined.

The meeting ought to be very interesting as certain City Council loyalties play out in public.

Mr. Barnes is also a stakeholder in the downtown area and has received CRA dollars to improve at least one of his property's facades. Mr. Barnes is also the president of Homestead Mainstreet.

Mr. Rosen, on the other hand, has appeared to receive favorable council decisions and has entertained Council members at his expense.
